BY AIRPLANE:
Reggio Calabria's airport is the closest (40 kms or 27 miles plus the Strait of Messina crossing).
But it's easier to land in Catania (135 kms or 95 miles), thanks to the shuttle to/from the Eolian Islands. Palermo's airport (230 kms or 170 miles) is not to be suggested, unless the flights to the former airports are already fully booked. |
BY TRAIN: get off the train in Milazzo, whose railway station is only 3 kms (2 miles) from the port, where you can go by bus which commute back and forth (no-stop service).
BY SHIP: Milazzo is the closest port to the Eolian Islands. Ships, ferryboats (the journey takes up to 3 hours and 45 minutes) and hydrofoils (the journey takes 1 hour and a half) leave from here on regular basis several time every day. Getting aboard in Naples might prove to be better for anyone coming from Northern Italy (the journey takes 6 hours by hidrofoil and 12 hours by ship). Other services: from Reggio Calabria/Messina and from Palermo. |
BY CAR: unlike the other Eolian Islands, there are no restrictions to the car access in Salina. Getting the speedway A20 Messina-Palermo, the exit is "Milazzo" (35 kms from Messina). |
